Filing now open for Minnetonka City Council

This November, Minnetonka voters will head to the polls to elect a mayor and two at-large councilmembers.

The Minnetonka City Council is the governing body of the city, responsible for setting city policy, approving the annual budget and tax levy and establishing the city’s strategic plan.

Councilmembers also represent the city at public events and act as liaisons for various boards and commissions. The council appoints the city manager as the chief administrative officer of the city to oversee daily operations.

All municipal seats are nonpartisan. The mayor and councilmembers each have one vote on the council.

Eligibility

To run for Minnetonka City Council, you must be:

  • Eligible to vote in Minnesota
  • At least 21 years old upon assuming office
  • Not running for another office in the upcoming election
  • A Minnetonka resident at least 30 days before the general election

How to file

To appear as a candidate on this year’s ballot, you must file in-person at city hall during business hours. The required Affidavit of Candidacy form is available on the city website and at city hall.

Any candidate who wishes to withdraw their name after having submitted their Affidavit of Candidacy must do so by Thursday, Aug. 14. After that date, candidates may not withdraw, and their name will
be printed on the Nov. 4 ballot.

An info session for candidates filing for city office will be Aug. 13.
