Minnetonka Police launch state's first DFR program

Post Date:08/25/2025

On Monday, August 25, 2025, the Minnetonka Police Department made history by becoming the first police department in Minnesota to officially launch a Drones as First Responders (DFR) Program.

The program was formally introduced during a press conference, where city leaders, police officials, members of the media and community members gathered to see firsthand how this technology will transform public safety in Minnetonka.

Chief Boerboom highlighted how drones will allow officers and firefighters to arrive virtually at a scene within minutes, often before ground units. “DFR will help us reduce response times, provide real-time information to our officers and fire crewsand increase safety for everyone involved,” the Chief said.

Mayor Wiersum praised the program as a milestone for the city: “This shows how Minnetonka is leading the way in innovation and collaboration, ensuring our community is safer and stronger.”

Following the remarks, the department conducted a live drone demonstration that simulated a 911 call. Attendees watched as the drone launched, streamed live video back to the operations center and provided situational awareness for responders. Fire officials noted how the program will assist in identifying hotspots during fires, supporting search-and-rescue efforts and improving response during hazardous incidents.

The Minnetonka Police Department emphasized that transparency and accountability will remain a cornerstone of the program, with clear policies on when and how drones are deployed and a public transparency portal.

“This is not about replacing officers or firefighters,” Chief Boerboom said. “It’s about giving our first responders the tools they need to protect this community more effectively.”
