After six years of heavy construction, trains will occasionally be seen on the Green Line light rail project that runs through the Opus Area. Operational tests are scheduled to begin this fall as crews take another step toward completing the line, which is scheduled to open in 2027.
“In September we will move trains from Target Field to SouthWest Station in Eden Prairie,” said James Mockovciak, a community outreach coordinator with Metro Transit. “At first they will be pulled and later in the fall the trains will be live.”
Railroad crossing warning lights and bells will also become active as trains approach those areas, Mockovciak said. METRO transit has produced a video to explain this next phase of the project. You can also track updates on the Green Line Extension project page.
The Green Line Extension will add more than 14 miles to the existing light rail network connecting Eden Prairie to downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Minnetonka’s stop, near the intersection of Bren Road East and Bren Road West, will be known as Opus Station. The station design includes connections to the region’s trail network.
Once completed, it will be part of Metro Transit’s integrated system of light rail, commuter rail, major bus routes and proposed future transitways.
