Meet Minnetonka's newest police officers: Taylor Hovde, who joined the department in February, and Shannon King, who joined the department in September.

Officer Taylor Hovde

Officer Hovde

Drawn to working in a fast-paced environment, Officer Taylor Hovde began her career in the healthcare industry, where she quickly discovered her passion for helping people in meaningful ways. While she was proud of the work she was doing in the healthcare field, she knew her passions lay elsewhere, so she started searching for a better fit.

"After stepping away from graduate school, I took about a year to reflect, spending a lot of time in prayer, seeking clarity about what should come next," she said. "Through that process, I truly believe the Lord called me to step into law enforcement. Since saying yes to that calling, doors have opened in ways I never imagined. It's been nothing short of a miracle - a clear confirmation that I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be."

One of the doors that opened for her was the discovery of the ICPOET program, a Minnesota program designed to benefit two- and four-year college graduates or individuals looking to transition into a career in law enforcement. Through the program, Hovde earned a salary while gaining hands-on experience and taking required intensive, comprehensive training at Hennepin Technical College.

For Hovde, the ICPOET program was absolutely worth it. "As long as you're willing to put in the time and effort, this program is perfect for anyone looking to transition into a career in law enforcement."

Officer Shannon King

Having freshly graduated from the University of Minnesota, Officer King still had no idea what she wanted to do with her career. Then, she fell into 9-1-1 dispatching.

While working her dispatch position with Hennepin County, King yearned to be part of the action, so she began taking her skills courses during the day while working at night. King knew that once she finished her skills courses, she wanted to start making a difference.

"My desire to work in law enforcement stems from my passion for strengthening the relationship between the public and the police, she said. "...I believe that the smallest interactions make the biggest difference in the long run and I hope to use those moments as opportunities to leave positive impressions on those we serve, especially to restore trust within those communities that may harbor resentment towards the police."

While searching for a department to join, King knew she only wanted to do it once. "I want to start my career at the same department where I retire and I believe Minnetonka's high retention trends support that goal."
