Minnetonka Mayor Rebecca Schack addressed federal Immigration Customs and Enforcement activity at a recent meeting.

On Monday, January 5, 2026, it was my honor to be officially sworn in as mayor of Minnetonka.  Since then, communities across Minnesota have witnessed a significant surge in federal law enforcement presence tied to an ongoing immigration enforcement operation and, in Minneapolis, a tragic encounter between a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent and a local resident resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman, Renée Nicole Good. Ms. Good’s death has deeply affected families and civic life across our state and has sparked widespread public concern, protests, and urgent calls for transparency, accountability, and justice.

While this event occurred in Minneapolis, the ripple effects are being felt across Hennepin County and throughout our region. Many of our residents are asking legitimate questions about federal enforcement actions, the use of force, and respect for civil liberties — questions that deserve thoughtful and constitutional responses.

As Mayor and as a licensed attorney in Minnesota, I have taken an oath and have an obligation to uphold the United State Constitution. I want to be clear, the Constitution remains our highest law. We will continue to uphold the fundamental rights guaranteed to every person within our jurisdiction — including due process, freedom of speech and assembly, and protection against unreasonable use of force.

Local law enforcement’s role is to keep our community safe. The Minnetonka Police Department and other local public safety agencies will continue to protect residents and visitors, respond to emergencies, and ensure that lawful protests and civic engagement are conducted peacefully and without fear of repression.

Federal authorities operating within Minnetonka or Hennepin County must do so in a way that respects individual rights, the rule of law, and the community’s safety. I will continue to implore our federal representatives to ensure proper warrants are obtained, civil liberties are protected, and due process is honored for all involved.

Finally, I urge calm, compassion, and respect for one another. We can disagree on policy and enforcement, but we must never abandon our commitment to constitutional principles and human dignity.
