A message from Mayor Rebecca Schack

Updates on city operations in support of community

Post Date:01/21/2026 12:30 p.m.

Many of us turn the calendar to a new year and have high ambitions and hopes for the year ahead. After a few weeks, we often reach the point of winter where even the heartiest among us need a boost to meet the day. As I write this message, the cold weather coupled with the current surge in federal immigration enforcement activity has combined to make this time of year extra difficult.

Understanding the concern and uncertainty many of you have expressed, I want to share a few updates on city operations as we work to identify and address these new challenges and connect residents and business owners with available resources. First, our community development team is checking in with our business community. You may already be aware some are struggling to keep operations going. This includes worker shortages, delayed deliveries and other service interruptions. Many businesses have noted the kindness and understanding of customers which are true to the character of our community.

Our nonprofit partners face a different challenge as they try to connect with those who might be afraid to seek support, regardless of their immigration status. If you are not familiar with the work of our nonprofit partners and the resources and support they provide, the city website is a great place to learn more about them.

Finally, our police, fire and other first responders are busy with calls, especially with the recent arrival of much colder weather. Our public safety personnel take great pride in the work they do and the trust and respect you offer in return. I’ve heard from residents and businesses who appreciate their presence. I am so proud of the work these folks do on behalf of our community.

In the past week I have met several times with a group of area mayors, city managers and law enforcement leaders. We know our collective voice can be effective in sharing issues and concerns with Minnesota’s congressional delegation and other federal authorities at work in our state. Most recently, we outlined specific concerns about the conduct of some federal agents. Federal immigration enforcement activity must always respect individual rights, the rule of law and the community’s safety.

In the midst of this troubling environment, I urge you to find new ways to support your community. Even in the best of years, nonprofits struggle with donations after the holidays and into the new year. I encourage you to contribute your resources and your time as generously as you are able. If it’s been a while since you visited your favorite local business, please show your support. If you don’t know your neighbors, introduce yourself. Most importantly, please take care of yourself.
