Bike Month got rolling as local leaders and cyclists gathered to celebrate improved and reopened bike trails connecting Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie along the METRO Green Line Extension corridor. Minnetonka Mayor Rebecca Schack joined other west metro mayors for a community ride along the line celebrating the regional trail connections and future transit service.

Minnetonka's Opus area will be served by light rail which connects to a local trail system as well as neighborhood streets. The city envisions a new Metro Micro transit-on-demand service will connect customers to the Opus and Shady Oak Station areas, allowing LRT customers to hail rides to their final destinations. Opus is considered a hot real estate market with 1,700 permitted multifamily units within a half mile of light rail stations

As part of the Green Line Extension construction project, crews repaved sections of trail and added several new safety and accessibility improvements, including trail underpasses.

The Green Line Extension is a 14.5-mile expansion of the existing METRO Green Line and will extend light rail service through Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. The area

The celebration also coincided with the Minnesota Food Truck Festival, held along Historic Mainstreet in Hopkins from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., featuring more than 40 food vendors and live music.  Representatives from Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation Services also took part in the event.

Testing is currently underway along the corridor. Trail users are reminded to stay alert near rail crossings and obey all warning lights and gate arms, as trains can travel in either direction at any time. The Green Line Extension is expected to open in 2027, with an official opening date to be announced later this year.
