The Minnetonka Police Department employes a full-time social worker to provide assistance and resources to mental health crisis calls.

Here’s how the program works:

1. Minnetonka officers respond to mental health, substance use or other calls where there is a resource need.
2. If the social worker is available she may respond directly to the call, otherwise follow-up is conducted by the social worker via phone, letter or in-person visit.
3. All outreach is on a voluntary basis and no one is required to work with the social worker because the police were called.
4. Those in need of additional assistance are referred to partner organizations for therapy, counseling, long-term case management or other resources.

The goal of the program is to provide real, long-term solutions, rather than simply responding to calls for service. The hope is the program results in a win-win situation for residents and police – that it will get help to those who need it, and less time and resources will be dedicated to repeat service calls.

Minnetonka has trained a team of officers – the Crisis Intervention Team – to assist in specific situations.

These officers receive additional training to learn about various mental illnesses that police may encounter on duty and techniques that may help to resolve the situation by focusing on a person’s needs. Read more about the department's CIT trained officers.
