A message from Mayor Rebecca Schack

On Jan. 12, Minnetonka Mayor Rebecca Schack made a statement at the City Council meeting regarding Immigrations Customs and Enforcement presence in Minnetonka and surrounding communities. Read the statement here.

Local law enforcement agencies, including the Minnetonka Police Department, have received growing attention regarding the role local police departments play in immigration enforcement with federal law enforcement agencies, including ICE.

The Hennepin County Chiefs of Police Association released this statement clarifying law enforcement's role in federal immigration enforcement:

"Hennepin County police departments remain steadfast in our commitment to serve and protect everyone in our communities - regardless of immigration status. Effective policing cannot be accomplished without community trust, and that means every person should feel empowered to seek help, report crimes, and engage with local law enforcement. Public safety is eroded and the whole community is put at risk when people fear interactions with local police over their immigration status.

Our priority is community safety. Hennepin County police departments maintain a clear distinction between federal immigration enforcement and our role as local law enforcement officers. Civil immigration violations fall outside of our jurisdiction and are the responsibility of federal authorities. Our officers do not ask for citizenship status or immigration papers. This has been a consistent practice across our departments, regardless of what administration is in the White House.

It is an honor to protect and serve our communities, and we remain committed to public safety, accountability, and serving the people of Hennepin County with integrity and respect."
