Public works installs and maintains the city’s street signs, including street identification, speed limit, directional and cautionary.

Requesting street signs

To request a sign for a street or intersection, call 952-939-8236. Engineers will evaluate the situation and make a recommendation. Requesting new street signs can involve a petition process and other challenges.

Speed limits are set by state statute. The state conducts traffic studies and evaluates requests to change speed limits.

Maximum speed limits for passenger vehicles are:

• Alleys: 10 miles per hour
• Residential streets: 30 miles per hour
• Other roads: 55 miles per hour
• Urban freeways and highways: 65 miles per hour
• Freeways and highways outside urban areas: 70 miles per hour
