Many of the water meters in Minnetonka are nearing the end of their useful lifecycle. The batteries installed in the radio transmitters, which are used to by public works to remotely read water meters, are beginning to fail.

The city has opted to install new meters that will provide more accurate usage information. Additionally, these new meters transmit information every 6-8 hours. A web portal will allow users to monitor their water usage in real time, which can help detect potential leaks or water system issues. The web portal is expected to be available by the end of 2026.

The water meter replacement project will take approximately 4 years to complete. This is a multi-phase project, so some water users may not receive a new meter for several years.

All remaining homes (approximately 9000) will be completed in 2026.

Please note: You will be contacted via letter if your property has been selected for the current replacement phase. Do not schedule an appointment if you have not received confirmation from the city or Ferguson Waterworks.

Appointments can be made Monday - Friday with evening and weekend appointments available by request. Residential installations take approximately 30-45 minutes, with water being turned off for 10 minutes.  

Prior to installation of the new water meter you will receive a letter from the city or Ferguson Waterworks and RMR Services, the contractor for this project. Make sure that the area around the water meter is clear and accessible.  

• Test your shut off valve using the ball or gate valve installed in front of the water meter.
• If you do not have a valve, are unable to shut off the valve or it leaks, you will need to repair or replace it prior to installation. Hire a licensed plumber for installation. Local plumbers typically charge $300 - $600 for a standard replacement, depending on the number and size of valves. City code requires that all water services have working shut-off valves on both sides of the meter.
